Selective pull quotes don’t tell full story of shared responsibilities

Letters to the Editor

Does Idaho County Democrat Chairman John Andrechak completely understand the full meaning of the Catholic teachings that both Pope Leo XIII and Saint John Paul II are writing about? [Referencing guest opinion, Aug. 29 issue]

It is disappointing to see any elected official selectively pull quotes and politicize one’s faith, in essence claiming to speak for the entirety of that faith. Rerum Novarum and Laborem Excercens represent so much more than men’s rights to organize as a collective group. They speak of shared responsibilities and the rights and duties of business owners and labor to each other and that one cannot exist without the other. These documents are a call to the building of relationships between the two forces to organize society to the good.

They also speak sternly against the evils of socialism and against the attempt of governments to intrude and exercise intimate control over society.

With that in mind, why is today’s Democrat party so enthusiastically embracing what they call Democratic Socialism? If Chairman Andrechak, as a Catholic, wants to embrace the true meaning of these documents, then he would denounce his party’s march towards socialism. He might also work within his party to build a culture that defends life from conception to natural death.
