Letters to the Editor

Another way to look at NICI carolers

In the Free Press, for three weeks, I have read emotional letters over the Christmas caroling done by “residents” at NICI to “residents” at the assisted living homes in Grangeville.

Carbon monoxide: avoid injury, death; take precautions

Kooskia Fire and Ambulance have responded to at least five incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning in the last two years. These resulted in two fatalities and twelve patients transported to a hospital. Some of the exposures were quite serious with effects lasting for a significant period of time. These could have resulted in additional fatalities in a relatively short period of time.

Why perpetuate the criminal stigma?

I have been disappointed and disheartened by the recent letters to the editor with the unkind and, in my opinion, unwarranted comments about NICI’s community service program.

How soon we forget Waco, Ruby Ridge

When I was young, I liked to watch the TV show, “The Untouchables.” I understood that these FBI agents were “incorruptible.” Maybe back then, but not today! How soon we forget Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and Waco, Texas.

Rally cry of equality steals your triumphs...

Prevailing attitudes promulgate practices upon the public. For example: Offshoring /outsourcing in an attempt to internationalize economies at our expense, where vocational schools were retired. We heard in an address by Trump that spoke of bringing back vocational studies. Politics dictates policy. Open borders is a policy of integrating globalist interests.

All in all, we just want residents’ safety first

Last week, a rebuttal letter was published about concerns of NICI “convicts” (because they are all convicted of crimes) or offenders or inmates or clients or students or whatever the department is calling them now, caroling at a nursing home where my mother-in-law resides. There is some misinformation in this rebuttal.

Hoped Idaho would lead way to reject Con-Con con

Two things are going on right now, namely a push for a convention of states to bypass Congress to create a Constitutional Convention. That is not possible. The states have no such power. Only Congress can call a Constitutional Convention, hence the name Con-Con con.

It all has to be picked up. - In steep terrain, throw to the upside of the road. - Empty all twist top containers and screw lid back on....

Wisdom through the awful grace of god

As my siblings and I gathered for our father’s Friday funeral, I reflected on how people sometimes speak of “death by natural causes,” such as death related to old age. But death always seems, to me, so unnatural, as though we mortals were meant to live forever.

Tax base erosion faces taxpayers who make up difference

This year brings another round of elections asking voters to approve financing the maintenance and operations of area schools. Regardless of your position on whether or not levies should be supported, I want to make everyone aware of the reality that faces local taxpayers—the continuing erosion of our tax base.

Offenders’ activity appropriate; benefit to them, center residents

Last week I read a letter to editor concerning having offenders from North Idaho Correctional Institution providing caroling to a Grangeville rehabilitation center. The author indicated his mother really enjoyed the carolers; however, he was concerned about the criminal records and law enforcement agencies not being notified. There are numerous misrepresentations in this letter that I would like to clear.

Male depression: a hidden reason good men behave badly

What did these great men have in common: Luther, Calvin, Charles Wesley, Spurgeon, Goethe, Tolstoy, Robert E. Lee, Lincoln, Churchill, Martin Luther King, Mike Wallace, and Nelson Mandela? According to Archibald D. Hart, each man suffered from depression.
