Football officials association recruiting refs for fall

Recruitment is under way for football officials for high school and junior high school football in Idaho’s District 2. The first meeting, which is an introductory meeting for coaches and officials, touches on rules changes from last season and points of emphasis for this season. It will be held Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Lewiston High School Auditorium.

Pirates place third

Beating Garden Valley, Glenns Ferry and Potlatch, the Prairie softball girls placed third at the 1A state tournament last weekend. Having rallied through the consolation bracket after a second-round loss to eventual champion Notus, Prairie squared off against Whitepine League rival Genesee with a chance to reach the title game on the line last Saturday morning. Genesee prevailed 16-2 in that one, but Notus took the title with a 3-0 win in the final.

Grangeville takes second place in Nampa

Grangeville’s Hunter Schoo was the goat for much of last Friday afternoon, May 18 at Nampa Christian High School. But at the end of the Bulldogs’ semifinal comeback win over Malad, Schoo was Grangeville’s hero.

Kamiah’s Kaleb Oatman had thrown the discus farther and farther each week since April 28, but even a new personal record might not have outdistanced the bombs barrel-chested Valley sophomore Collin Tvrdy hurled last Saturday morning, May 19.

GHS sending 10 to state tennis

Grangeville’s Colby Kennedy won the district boys singles title and is one of 10 Bulldogs on to state. The state meet runs May 18-19 at Vallivue and Caldwell high schools.

Grangeville wins district

Grangeville’s second consecutive district title came on the heels of coach Lee Nadiger’s first regular season title, as the Bulldogs ran over Orofino 12-2 and blunted a last-inning rally by St. Maries to win the district title game 3-2.
