Rioux hat trick keys girls soccer win

Grangeville's soccer boys and girls took both ends of a double-header on a long road trip Thursday, Sept. 13. The boys beat Priest River 5-2 on the strength of two goals by Aidan Acton and one apiece by Jesus Perez, Collin Husted and Dalton Dennis, while the girls prevailed 5-1 on a hat trick by Mia Rioux and two goals by Naomi Connolley.

GHS soccer girls get competitive

Just nine games into the season, Grangeville girls soccer freshman Mia Rioux has established herself as a threat out of the midfield on runs alongside top scorer Naomi Connolley. She and Connolley each scored one unassisted last Thursday, Sept. 13 at Priest River, and the two of them combined on three others.

Vander Esch notches first NFL tackle

On a first-and-15 following a false start penalty with 7:07 left in the second quarter of Sunday’s Cowboys-Panthers NFL game, Salmon River High School alum Leighton Vander Esch booked his first official tackle, bringing down Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey after a seven yard gain. The series went three-and-out, but Carolina went on to win by 16-8 final score.

Flerchinger memorial tournament set Oct. 20

In honor of a young basketball player who unexpectedly passed away this summer, the YAB he helped to found is organizing the 1st Annual Spencer Flerchinger Memorial Co-ed 3v3 Basketball Tournament on Oct. 20. Funds raised will be used to help the family with expenses and to establish a scholarship in Spencer’s name.

Perez keys comeback win

The Grangeville boys haven’t lost to Priest River on a soccer field even once since the program’s inception during Jesus Perez’s freshman year. After GHS fell behind 3-0 last Thursday afternoon, the junior helped keep the win streak going with a couple of goals.

Bulldogs rip Nampa Christian 54-7

Nampa Christian played Grangeville tough for one quarter, but gave up three scores in rapid succession late in the first half as the Bulldogs surged to a 54-7 win and a 2-0 start to their 2018 football season.

Mistakes and miscommunication in the Bulldogs’ back put the GHS boys soccer team in a 3-0 hole early in their game Thursday afternoon, Aug. 30, against Priest River. But on the strength of two goals by Jesus Perez, Grangeville wound up with its first win of the season.
