Joan started her nursing career graduating from The Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket, R.I. She was known as “Birche” by her many friends from school she enjoyed staying in touch with through the years. In addition to working as an ER and geriatric nurse in various hospitals and nursing homes in towns as diverse as Pullman, Wash., Moscow, Idaho, Pinehurst, McCall, Elk City, Grangeville, Lewiston and Fairbanks, Alaska, while raising their three children, she also volunteered and taught EMT courses in McCall and Elk City. She enjoyed bowling and was a league bowler for many years. After spending five years between Delta Junction and North Pole, Alaska, from 1980-1985, they returned to Idaho and she later helped operate Fetch and Carry Trucking Company with her husband in Pollock from 1986 to 2005.
