Ellen B. Haskin passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, at the Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center, Grangeville, Idaho. She was born March 19, 1922, in Grass Valley, Ore., to Volando B. Eakin and Verna Fay Blaylock. She had seven older brothers (an eighth brother died in infancy). Ellen grew up in Sherman County in the Oregon area where her parents and grandparents homesteaded and farmed. She graduated from Grass Valley High School in 1941 and then attended college at Willamette University.
She married Garold Lee Haskin at Grass Valley, Ore., on May 2, 1943. They moved to Boise for several years before settling in Idaho County, 14 miles northeast of Grangeville in 1950. They raised three children while farming, and also acquired and managed numerous residential and commercial rental properties.
During the more active years in her community, she was a member of the Pierce Park Grange, Boise; Mountain Queen Chapter, No. 11, Order of the Eastern Star, Mitzpah Rebekah Lodge, Lady Elks and the rock and gem club. While her time in Grangeville, she was also a member of the Grangeville Christian Church. She was also active in the National Farmers Organization and the Democratic Party, and was able to attend several conventions within those groups.
Ellen enjoyed reading, crocheting, country music, the Old Time Fiddlers and was a pet lover. Although her travels were not extensive she enjoyed it very much, whether near or far. In the recent years she was able to enjoy more distant travel with family.
She was preceded in death by husband, Garold L. Haskin, in December of 2003; her parents; brothers Alva, Millard, Harold, Owen, Ralph, Vernon, Elton and Melvin Eakin.
She is survived by sons, Fred L. (Debbie) Haskin of Elk Grove, Calif., Gary E, (Robin) Haskin of Lewiston; one daughter, Ruby E. Haskin Sargent (Frank) of Grangeville; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m. at the Grangeville Christian Church with Pastor Harold Gott officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Blackmer Funeral Home, Grangeville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Research or Pet Rescue. Send condolences to the family to
