Elma “Jean” Ulmer, 78, of Tahoe Ridge near Kooskia, Idaho, died May 27, 2015, at Brookside Landing in Orofino, Idaho, of natural causes.
Jean was born Nov. 21, 1936, at Castleford, Idaho, to Vernal and Elma (Harris) Peterson.
Jean grew up in Buhl, Idaho, and graduated from Buhl High School. After high school, Jean attended the University of Idaho in Moscow, where she met her future husband and lifelong partner, Lewis Otto Ulmer. Jean and Lewis were married Sept. 11, 1955, in Grangeville, Idaho, and they soon settled on the ranch on Tahoe Ridge. She was a busy rancher/farmer’s wife, mother and homemaker until 1970 when she took on the added job of being the secretary at the Clearwater Valley Elementary School in Kooskia, Idaho. “Mrs. Ulmer” (as she was known by all the students) retired in 2002.
After retirement, Jean kept busy trying to keep up with the yard work in the summers and in winter doing all the “do later jobs” that couldn’t be done in the summer. Jean was an active member and enjoyed eating at the senior citizens, playing pinochle and dominos, helping with spaghetti feed and the soup and sandwich day (both are fund-raisers). She was also an active member of the Tahoe Quick Response Unit, Big Cedar Extension Club (making and selling the Christmas swag for a needy family), to the QRU; Valley Food Bank; Kooskia Library and the Tahoe Mountain Rest Cemetery. She was as busy as retirement let her be.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Vernal and Elma Peterson; her brothers, Don, Jim and Ralph Peterson; and recently her son-in-law, Dan Doramus.
Jean is survived by her husband, Lewis at their Tahoe Ridge Home; daughters, Betty (Don) Gaeden of Central Point, Ore., Deana Doramus and Christy (Don) Owens all of Stites, Idaho, and Sandy (Tim) Frisbey of Moscow, Idaho; grandchildren, Brock (Kim) Owens, Chad (Marianne) Owens of Boise, Idaho, Heidi (Eric) York of Grangeville, Idaho, Dwayne (Alexis) Doramus of Lewiston, Idaho, Shane (Tavia) Agee of Lancaster, Calif., Desiree (Dave Hofmann) Doramus of Lewiston, Idaho, Tara Dawdy of Dallas, Texas, Whitney (Eric) Warner of Seattle, Wash., and Eric Frisbey of Moscow, Idaho; great-grandchildren, Gracynn, MaKenna, Brynnley, Ava, Cooper, Tolsen, Dawson, Sawyer, Macey, Izabell, Kaylee and Liam; brother, Carl (Donna) Peterson of Twin Falls, Idaho; and sister, Joann Peterson.
A celebration of life and potluck dinner will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at The Country Center, 4313 Highway 13, Stites, Idaho. Come celebrate Jean’s life and bring your favorite dish and all your great memories to share also.
If you wish to make a memorial contribution in Jean’s name, her favorite causes are Back Country Horsemen, Tahoe Mountain Rest Cemetery and Big Cedar Homemakers. Trenary Funeral Home of Kooskia, Idaho, is assisting the family.
