Kathy Spinks (Medel), 63, passed away May 6, 2015.
Teacher, mentor, traveler, spiritual seeker, Kathy lived each day of her life to the fullest!
Hattiesburg, Miss., is her hometown where she grew up with her parents and one brother. Her father, Sam, was the city school superintendent during the 60s when integration of the local Mississippi schools was taking place. Her upbringing is where she got that sweet southern accent and perhaps her true sense of compassion and justice.
Kathy was a model of quintessential southern hospitality. Her warm, kind spirit may have hidden how incredibly strong and adventurous she really was. She always dreamed of exploring new places and meeting new friends. She especially enjoyed being out in nature whether it was walking on sandy beaches or hiking in the mountains.
Dave Medel and Kathy met in college at Southern Mississippi State. Together they traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe. They taught school for several years in Venezuela and sailed around the Caribbean. While returning from Alaska, they fell in love with the beauty of the Clearwater Valley and built a log home above Harpster. They later divorced.
Although Kathy did not have children, she loved learning and nurtured all children as her own. For decades at Kooskia’s Clearwater Valley Schools, Mrs. Medel/Ms. Spinks was a respected first-grade teacher, deeply loved by students, colleagues and the community.
In 2003, Kathy met her love and life partner, Bill Aldinger. Together they forged a life, seeking peace and beauty in many places throughout the West and Mexico. They built their dream home and became a part of the fabric of the small community of Crestone, Colo.
After a valiant fight with ovarian cancer, Kathy left this earth in Bill’s arms. Throughout the battle she was supported by many friends and family and is now making “Footprints in the Sand.”
Kathy made us all better through her grace and love and will remain in our hearts always. If you have special memories or condolences you would like to send to Kathy’s family and Bill, the address is Bill Aldinger, PO Box 471, Crestone, CO 81131
