Bringing the gift of music…
Sister Angela Uhlorn, 80, of the Monastery of St. Gertrude was born into eternal life on May 12, 2016. She died peacefully surrounded by sisters and caregivers. Sister Angela will be remembered for her service in education, music, and parish work and also for her sense of humor and love of God.
Sister Angela Uhlorn was born July 19, 1935, and raised on a Camas Prairie farm in an exceptionally musical family of 12 children. She played several instruments and was a vocalist. By high school, the young musician’s life was as robust as her music. She dove into school activities as well as social ones. Even through the excitement of her teens, she began to feel called to religious life, entering the Monastery in August 1953.
She made her First Monastic Profession on June 13, 1955, and continued her music lessons with Sister Anna. Sister Angela began her first teaching job in Nampa, also helping to teach music after school. Later, she taught at Genesee, Our Lady of Lourdes in Lewiston and St. Gertrude’s Academy, leading a large glee club and smaller ensembles called “Tentets.”
In 1969, Sister Angela was sent on a mission to Bogota, Colombia, to teach fifth grade boys. However, a severe injury to her elbow from a horseback riding accident cut her time there short and prevented her from ever playing violin again.
Upon recovery, Sister Angela entered parish work beginning with St. Mary’s Parish in Boise and St. Jerome’s in Jerome. Her focus remained on Spanish-speaking parishes where she could use the language skills she learned in Bogota.
Sister Angela came home to the Monastery in 2000 and participated in the community choir, filling the chapel with song. “Music has kept me renewed in my calling,” she said. “I am proud and happy to bring the gift of music to so many people.” She also worked in the Development Office as the Alumni Coordinator.
Sister Angela is survived by her siblings, Edna Ruhoff, Irma Tacke, Jane Hoene, Vern Uhlorn, Maurus Uhlorn, Sister Cecile Uhlorn, OSB, Sally Terhaar, and Merna Gehring and her monastic community.
A Rosary Vigil Service will be held on Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m. and the funeral liturgy will be held on Friday, May 20, 1:30 p.m. at the Monastery chapel. Memorial gifts in Sister Angela’s honor can be made to the Monastery of St. Gertrude, 465 Keuterville Road, Cottonwood, ID 83522.
