Joan Louise Robinette, 77, of Grangeville, Idaho, died Monday, April 3, 2017, at her home in Grangeville. She was born to Garrett and Johanna Workman in Grangeville, Idaho on June 18, 1939.
During her childhood years she was a farmer’s daughter working on the farm in Grangeville. She graduated as valedictorian from Grangeville High School in 1957. She then attended St. Elizabeth’s school of nursing in Yakima, Wash., and graduated also as valedictorian in 1960.
Joan moved back to Grangeville and spent one year as a public health nurse. She entered into the Peace Corps in 1961. She was in the first group of Peace Corps volunteers. Joan then went on to Notre Dame to train under Fr. Ted for her two years of service in the Peace Corps for Chile.
Upon returning to Grangeville in 1963 she worked with job corps in Cottonwood, Idaho. Following that she was a registered nurse for Syringa General Hospital for about 40 years. She taught many nurses to do patient care at the highest level and to always put the patient first.
During her time at Syringa, she met and married the love of her life, Ray Robinette, in May of 1971.They were married for 45 years. In October of 1986 they adopted a sweet little girl named Heidi. She was the one that made Ray and Joan’s life complete.
Joan loved to garden and work in her yard. She loved to play cards with friends and family. She bowled for more than 40 years. She was an avid reader. Joan loved to be outside as much as she could.
Joan belonged to the Soroptimist group in Grangeville. She was also a member of the Grangeville Christian Reformed Church for her entire life. She was Idaho County’s first lady coroner in the early 1970s and served one term as coroner.
She is survived by her husband, Ray Robinette of Grangeville; daughter, Heidi (Erik) Whitcomb of Grangeville; grandkids, Mason and Cameron Whitcomb; one brother, Robert Workman of Cape Coral, Fla.; and a sister, Connie Workman of Grangeville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a granddaughter, Kristin.
A funeral service was held Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville with Pastor Michael Gulotta of the Grangeville Christian Reformed Church officiating.
