Sharon Joy Brixen, 76, of Grangeville, Idaho, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at her home. Her heart was tired and she was ready to join her husband.
Sharon was born July 17, 1941, in Sandpoint, Idaho, to Carl and Lustella Shields of Clark Fork, Idaho. She was raised with her brothers, Dennis and John and sisters, Karen and Becky. She grew up in Clark Fork and Heron, Mont., graduating from Noxon High School in 1959. In her early years, she spent time playing at the family ranch in Dorite and picnicking down on an island at the mouth of the Clark Fork River with her extended family. She also enjoyed playing a mean game of canasta with her siblings and visiting her grandmother, great-grandmother and great aunt. She attended the University of Montana and Kinman Business School in Spokane, Wash., graduating in 1960. She was employed at the Tift’s Insurance Agency in Sandpoint from 1960-1962. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Allen, at a dance at the Eagles Lodge in Sandpoint in Aug. of 1960. Sharon and Allen were married on Dec. 27, 1961, in Clark Fork.
They lived in Moscow, Idaho, until Allen graduated from the University of Idaho in 1963. They moved many times throughout Allen’s career in forestry--first to Newport, Wash., then to Slate Creek, Idaho where her daughter, Suzanne and son, Allen were born. Later moves included Helena, Mont.; Clarkia, Idaho; St. Maries, Idaho and Grangeville where they finally made their permanent home. She began working in 1980 for G&D Motor & Machine/Partsway as their bookkeeper, retiring in Dec. of 2014.
Sharon enjoyed playing bridge with the Forest Service ladies and pinochle with her friends at the Senior Center. As her kids got older, she took a deeper interest in her Irish heritage, collecting many Irish keepsakes. Her love of her heritage included a once in a lifetime trip to Ireland with her brother and sisters. She also traveled to Hawaii with her mom and sisters to enjoy some family time on the Big Island.
Additionally, she perfected her art of knitting, making dishcloths for all her family members. She was renowned for her great cooking skills.
Sharon was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years; her parents; her in-laws, Royel & Audrey Brixen; her niece, Dorie Hurt; and her brother-in-law, George Harper. She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne and husband, Lance Carpenter; son, Allen Andrew; and grandsons, Shane, Shawn and Shann, all of Lewiston, Idaho. Also, surviving her are her sisters, Karen (Mike) Guilfoyle, of Genesee, Idaho and Becky Holt, of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers, Dennis Shields, of Clark Fork and John (Shannon) Shields, of Hayden Lake, Idaho; sister-in-law, Linda Harper, of Sun City West, Ariz.; and brother-in-law, Stanley (Sandy) Brixen, of Hayden Lake; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She will always be remembered as a loving and caring mom, grandmother, sister and auntie with an infectious smile and a good story or joke to tell.
There will be a memorial service on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at 210 N. Mill Street, Grangeville, ID.
