Josephine “Betty Jo” Dasenbrock, 95, died Sunday, July 29, 2018, in Boise, with her family by her side.
Betty Jo was born on Jan. 20, 1923, in Cottonwood, Idaho, the daughter of Mayme Sager Gentry and her husband, Joe Gentry. Joe died of a ruptured appendix during Mayme’s pregnancy. Five years later, Mayme married Leo Toennis, and Betty Jo went on to become big sister to three siblings. She graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1941, and Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Spokane in 1945, returning home to begin her 40-year career at St. Mary’s Hospital from which she retired in 1986. Early in 1946, at a dance, she met the handsome love of her life and recently returned soldier, Virgil Dasenbrock, from Greencreek. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married on Sept. 16, 1946, and soon became proud parents of two children, Rosemarie and Donald Virgil.
Betty Jo spent her life in Cottonwood, raising her family while working at the hospital training nurse’s aides and taking care of so many patients, besides some of her lifelong friends and many wonderful doctors and nurses. In her spare time, she could be found fishing, boating and camping with Virgil, her very best friend and partner in all things. They even worked side by side building their home of 55 years. Virgil died in 1993, and she continued to live there and remain active in her senior citizens group, Pinochle Club, Red Cross, church guild and watching over elderly family and friends.
At the age of 85, she made a big change, leaving her home of 55 years behind and moving to Boise to be near much of her remaining family. After moving into her cute little apartment at Heatherwood Senior Living, she promptly became a prized member of the Prime Time Swingers rhythm band, performing at many local functions and senior centers. She moved to Grace Assisted Living at age 94.
Survivors and their families include her children, Rosemarie Wimer (Gayle Eaton) and Don Dasenbrock (Linda) of Boise; four grandchildren: Jeff (Kristine) Wimer, Karin (Marc) Aiello, and Mike (Barrett) Dasenbrock of Boise, and Jennifer (John) Fields of Colorado; seven great-grandchildren: Adeline, Collin, Ruby, Roman, Elsie, Brooke and Blake. She is survived also by her brother, Richard Toennis of Spokane; and sister, MaryLou Meyer of Fenn. She was preceded in death by Virgil; infant son Michael; son-in-law Larry Wimer; and most recently her brother, Jim Toennis.
A rosary was held followed by the Funeral Mass on Saturday, Aug. 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood. Burial followed at the Cottonwood Catholic Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Uhlorn Funeral Home.
