Bernie John Golz, 97, of Grangeville, Idaho died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018 at Syringa Hospital in Grangeville. He was born on Dec. 16, 1920 in Evansville, Wisc. to John and Rose Golz.
Bernie graduated from Evansville High School in 1938. He worked in the area for a while and enlisted in the U.S. Navy for two years (1945 & 1946). He married Janett Knudson in 1946.
He graduated from the U. of Wisconsin in Lacrosse on the G.I. Bill. He was a teacher and coach in several Wisconsin schools. Later after Janett's death, Bernie moved to Minnesota and got his Master’s Degree at the U. of Minnesota.
In 1969 he married Joan Johnson and her three children- Jeffery, Wendy and Patty. Bernie continued to work as the athletic director and coach at Lakewood Community College (Century College now) in White Bear Lake, Minn.
He retired in 1982 and moved to Bella Vista, Ark. He and Joan lived there until June 13, 2013. This is when they made their journey to Grangeville, Idaho to live until his death.
Bernie was a husband, stepfather, grandfather and great-grandfather- teacher, coach, U.S. Navy WW II veteran, athlete, athletic director and friend. He wore all these hats and wore them well. He will truly be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.
He is survived by his wife, Joan, and her children, Jeffery Johnson, of Seattle, Wash., Wendy (Ted) Lindsley of Grangeville, and Patty Furlong of St. Paul, Minn.
Cremation has taken place, and Bernie’s wishes will be followed: A family only remembrance in Wisconsin where he grew up. Arrangements are under the direction of Blackmer Funeral Home of Grangeville. Send condolences to the family to blackmerfuneralhome.com.
