Clara Denham Naftzger

Pocatello, Idaho

June 10, 1918 - April 21, 2018

Clara Denham Naftzger was born June 10, 1918, in Westlake, Idaho, the daughter of Henry and Ermal Denham. She died peacefully April 21, 2018, in Pocatello, Idaho at the age of 99.
Clara’s parents were pioneers from Missouri who settled in the Craig Mountain area of Idaho during the early 1900s. They moved a lot in Idaho, so she attended various schools.
She was the youngest of seven children. Eventually they moved to Ukiah, Calif, where Clara graduated from high school in 1936. They then moved back to Willowcreek, Oregon where Clara met Edward Naftzger. They were married Sept. 23, 1939. They lived and farmed at Willowcreek for a few years and then at Wilder, Idaho. They were blessed to have five children. In 1952 they moved to Kamiah, Idaho where Ed worked at the mill until his retirement.
Clara was a dedicated stay-at-home mom who loved music. She was active in various church and community activities. She always expected her children to be involved in school academics and activities. In 1981 she lost her beloved husband, Ed, to lung cancer. She continued to be active in the Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, volunteering to help at Burkhart Homes and in establishing the Senior Citizens group in Kamiah.
In 1998 she moved from Kamiah to Baggs, Wyo. to be close to her daughter, Wilma, and then in 2001 she relocated to Pocatello, Idaho to be near her sons, Ernie and Chuck.
Clara was preceded in death by her husband Ed; her parents, Henry and Ermal Denham; her sisters, Hazel Brown and Anna Skala; her brothers, Dan, Lloyd, Ken and George Denham; and her sons-in-law, Ed Reed and Bob Maguire. She also lost a great-granddaughter, Cherie Adams, in a heart operation.
Clara is survived by her children: Sandra Dowell, Ernest (Kate] Naftzger, Wilma Reed, Helen (Mike) Shawley, and Charles (Ray) Naftzger; her grandchildren, Jackie O’Leary, Eddy Williams, Eric (Shannon) Naftzger, Angie (Brad) Nelson, Colin (Ali) Naftzger, Carter (Rachel) Naftzger, David (Michelle) Reed, Dale Reed, Tonya Mattox, Troy (Jackie) Mattox, Emma (James) Peterson, and Nolan Naftzger. She had 21 great-grandchildren and various nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at the Kamiah Cemetery at 11 a.m., Aug. 8, 2018, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband.
