William “Jim” James Spickelmire

March 16, 1939 - May 21, 2018

William James “Jim” Spickelmire died of cancer on Monday, May 21, 2018. He was born March 16, 1939, at Roseberry, Idaho, to Richard and Hazel (Pottenger) Spickelmire. Jim grew up in Riggins, Idaho, with his sisters and brother.
On Aug. 16, 1959, Jim married Betty Jane Wisdom. They had three children. Married 58 years, Jim and Betty had grand adventures and weathered many storms because of their close bond. Later in life, this bond became even closer as they traveled as RVers, living “cheek to jowl” in their trailer. Betty was Jim’s greatest treasure.
Jim Spickelmire’s name is synonymous with the word “fishing.” Ever since he could hold worms in his mouth and catch a ride to the river in the back of a pickup, Jim fished. He operated Idaho Fishing Charters on the Salmon River and gained TV notoriety as a valued guest on Babe Winkleman’s “Good Fishing” show.
Always ready with a plan, a deal or an invention, Jim later created a product development company called Trail Creek, and held more than ten patents.
If Jim had opinions about something, he did not hesitate to let you know about them. He stood up for what he believed in, and was always ready to champion those he held dear.
One of his favorite pastimes was sitting around a table drawing on a napkin as he dreamed up a new invention. These sessions usually began with, “If a guy…”
A bodacious wonderment. That’s what Jim was.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jerry; and his grandson, Booker.
He is survived by wife, Betty; son, John Spickelmire (Janice); daughters, Kelly Bambacigno (John) and Krista Green; and sisters, Jane Voss (Lawrence) and Joyce Stapleton; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, take a child fishing.
A celebration of life and dinner will be held at 12 p.m. mountain time on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at the Riggins Community Center, Riggins, Idaho. Send condolences to the family to Arrangements are under the direction of Blackmer Funeral Home of Grangeville.
