Death notices are free and will be run one time in the Idaho County Free Press, but specific guidelines must be followed. The deceased’s name, date of birth and death, arrangements and service information will be published without charge.
Local obituaries are considered paid notices and are welcomed from families or funeral homes, costs run at set fees according to the following length/word guidelines. Your chosen funeral homes can be very helpful in determining which style and length are needed for any particular obituary. Family members are welcome to contact the Free Press office for the same assistance.
500 WORDS, OR LESS: $50: 500 words is considered optimal and is usually ample space to provide family and occupational information, civic and military involvement along with the important information provided by the simple death notice. The Free Press will not edit these submissions unless requested by the family. A single half-column color photo is offered free of charge. A $10 fee will be assessed for a second photo.
850 WORDS, OR LESS: $85: The additional space provided in the 850-word obituary is considered ample for obituaries requiring additional family member listings and/or simple memorial messages. The Free Press will not edit these submissions unless requested by the family. A single half-column color photo is offered free of charge. A $10 fee will be assessed for a second photo.
MORE THAN 850 WORDS, $250: Obituaries requiring a great deal of space to list extended family and memorial messages are welcomed, but at a much higher publishing fee. The Free Press publisher provides this category for those requesting it but is of the opinion that a quality obituary and death notice can be published for less than 850 words. The Free Press will not edit these submissions unless requested by the family. A single half-column color photo is offered free of charge. A $10 fee will be assessed for a second photo.
MEMORIALS: Obituaries and memorials requiring bordering, special type fonts and large or multiple photographs are designated as display advertising, handled by the advertising staff or the Free Press and not the editor. Please contact the advertising department of the Free Press or your funeral director for further information. Memorials can be placed in the Idaho County Free Press, The Shopper, or both.
ONLINE: All obituaries, regardless of length, will be offered on-line at no additional charge shortly after publication. Please refer to our online edition at : www.idahocountyfreepress.com
A FEW WORDS ABOUT YOUR FAMILY OBITUARY: An obituary is a very important document in which the Idaho County Free Press staff strives for accuracy. It is very important to work closely with your funeral home director to assure all information is correct and edited to desired length prior to submission. Proofing copies of obituaries submitted directly to the Free Press should be available if information is provided by Monday of that week’s edition (Wednesday). As an historical document--handed down and available to future generations--we urge the recorders of any obituary to include date of birth, immediate family members, military service and cause of death.
SUBMISSION INFORMATION: As noted in this letter, notices are usually compiled and submitted by your funeral home director although obituaries and death notices are accepted directly to the Free Press as well. To ensure publication in the first available edition, all notices should be received by the Free Press prior to Monday, 5 p.m. The Free Press publisher must reserve the right to alter or edit for appropriate content and extraordinary length of submissions.
