Kamiah schools settle in four-day routine

The community seems to have settled into the four-day school week in Kamiah, though Joint School District 304 Superintendent Steve Higgins said all the effects of the change cannot be known so early. “We’re only nine weeks into school, so it’s difficult to tell at this point how much impact the four-day week will have. Encourage vote on levy March 13

I would like to thank all of the people from the community who have worked to educate the public through social media and face-to-face conversation and to those who contacted me directly to discuss the upcoming supplemental election. The pointed questions and open discussion have shown me that the community is interested in the future of the school and also recognize the good things that the school is doing, to not only teach our children, but adapt to the societal changes that increase the burden on a difficult job.

You may have heard the term, maintenance of effort, in talking to people about the upcoming school levy election. It is a term that the State of Idaho uses to describe the portion of money that is required to be spent on specific programs or projects before money can flow back to the schools from the government.

Kamiah 304 to ask patrons for $500k in March levy vote

Kamiah Joint School District 304 will try again for a levy come March 13. “I think we’re ready; I think we’re in a good place,” said superintendent Steve Higgins. JSD 304 will ask patrons to pass a $500,000 maintenance and operations levy March 13.

The value we place on education

The community has asked that the district spend its reserve money and do what it can to be fiscally responsible. I will tell you that from a new superintendent’s perspective, the district has listened and may have listened too well.

Kamiah board vote to try four-day week with 2018-19 year

Still one year away, Kamiah Joint School District 304 will soon join the ranks of Orofino, Salmon River (Riggins) and Craigmont schools. At the July board meeting, trustees voted 3-2 in favor of going to a four-day week in the 2018-19 school year.
