ELK CITY -- I had the opportunity of connecting with some old acquaintances when I was able to attend the Friends of the Elk City Wagon Road meeting last Saturday. This is a very dedicated group working to keep the old route into Elk City open and the history alive. I remember when we had a horse and wagon ride over the road, camped overnight, and came in to Elk City the next day. What fun that was! The events planned for Elk City Wagon Road Days, July 26-27, including a parade in Clearwater, and a guided tour of the Wagon Road, will appear in this column in the ensuing months when plans are firmed up. They are having a raffle to raise money for expenses, including a lap quilt, a Ruger 10-22 rifle with w/3-9 variable scope, and a Savage 270 w/3-9 variable scope. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Come by the Elk City Hotel and get your chances to win one of these great prizes. Drawing will be July 21st.
We had some dog mushers come and check out the groomed trail up Elk Summit towards Iron Mountain. They had never been here, and they really liked the area and will be back for summer fun as well.
Dixie reports that there is 56 inches of snow “on the stick” up there! Maybe our weather cycle is on the upswing since the 1970’s when we had snow “over the tops of the fence posts!”
