Memorial Day events through Idaho County

Ceremony at Keuterville Cemetery Memorial Day 2016

A variety of Memorial Day and weekend activities are scheduled throughout Idaho County communities, including the following:

Greencreek, Cottonwood

The combined American Legion and VFW honor guard will conduct memorial ceremonies at the Greencreek Community Cemetery at 10 a.m., and the Cottonwood Catholic Community Cemetery at 11 a.m., followed by the Cottonwood Community Cemetery. Following the ceremonies there will be Quilts of Valor presentations at the Prairie Elementary School gymnasium, starting at noon.

All veterans are encouraged to join the honor guard in performing the ceremony. Meet at the American Legion Hall, Cottonwood, 9:15 a.m.

Elk City

The Elk City VFW and American Legion are again conducting the traditional Memorial Day services at the bridge in Elk City at 1 p.m., on Sunday, May 28.


Memorial Day services for Grangeville are set for Monday, May 29.

A service is set for Prairie View Cemetery at 9 a.m. by the flag pole (veterans memorial). No seating is available.

Master of ceremonies will be American Legion Post 37 commander Morris Bentley and prayer will be by pastor George Casteel.

There will be a Veterans of Foreign Wars presentation and the presentation of wreathes and poppies, as well as a salute to fallen comrades by the local honor guard.

A community service is set for 11 a.m. at Grangeville High School. Bentley and Casteel will also be present and In Flanders Fields will be read by Esther Owen. Quilts of Valor presentations will take place as will a military salute.

Guest speaker will be Mike Peterson, First Sergeant, retired, US Army.

Taps and prayer will end the ceremonies.

Slate Creek, White Bird

The American Legion Post No. 152 along with the Rebekahs will be placing flags on all of the veterans’ headstones at White Bird and Slate Creek cemeteries. This takes place on Friday, May 26, 1 p.m. Then, on Monday, May 29, the public is welcome to join in paying respect and rememberance of the sacrifices that this nation’s veterans have made. This starts at the White Bird Cemetery at 11 a.m., and then at noon at the White Bird City Park for the continued ceremony.


The Salmon River American Legion Post will hold its annual Memorial Day service Monday, May 29, at 11 a.m., honoring our military members who gave the supreme sacrifice of life. Memorial Day speaker will be Pastor Jim Thibodeaux. The American Legion Post will then travel to John Day Cemetery for its Memorial Day service.
