Results announced for chess tourney held in Cottonwood

Competitors at the Jan. 5 chess tournament in Cottonwood.

COTTONWOOD — The sixth annual Holiday Family Chess Tournament was held at Summit Academy in Cottonwood on Saturday, Jan. 5. This year’s event drew 27 participants, and 16 cash prizes were given out. The annual event is organized by Sandy Staab, “The Chess Guy,” and sponsored by area businesses.

Results are as follows:

Sportsmanship: Cody Crea; 1st Overall Student: Joe McQuigan; 2nd Overall Student: Preston Amerman; 3rd Overall Student: Levi Wassmuth;

Grades 1-3: 1st: Joey Waters; 2nd: Makalia Rowland; 3rd: Wyatt Crea; Grades 4-6: 1st: Rachel Sonnen; 2nd: Gryer Hollibough; 3rd: Camile Hollibough; Grades 7-9: 1st: Levi Wassmuth; 2nd: Lance Labrum; 3rd: Cassidy Hamilton; Grades 10-12: 1st: Joe McQuigan; 2nd: Preston Amerman; Adult: 1st: Robert Jensen; 2nd: George Watson; 3rd: John Hughes.
