RIGGINS Happy New Year! 2018 came in with family and friends, bells and whistles, food and drink. My quote of the week is “In with the new, out with the old.” Time for all of us to take a look at our clean slate of 2018 and fill it with family and friend times, new adventures and activities, wise decisions, good times, and more great memories.
Salmon River Schools resume classes Monday, Jan. 8. Basketball will be in full swing with both boys and girls games. Check with the SRHS office for a full schedule of games where you can cheer and support our SRHS kids. There will be no school Monday, Jan. 15, as it is Martin Luther King, Jr Day.
Riggins EMTs are looking for a few good men and women. If you feel this is your calling, go to the Riggins City Hall and get more information. EMT services are so important and need to be filled for the health and safety of us all. Thank you in advance for your service to our community. And a special thanks for the EMTs who have been giving their time and energy to those in medical needs.

Salmon River Community Church’s Pastor Mike Chapman has now been joined by his wife Becky and two daughters, Amelia and Alethea. The girls finished their first semester in Indiana and will now enroll for their second semester at Salmon River High School and Junior High. We welcome them to our community and look forward to include them in our school activities as well as our church and community activities and events.
Leighton Vander Esch, our hometown football hero , has decided to leave BSU a year early to enter the NFL Draft. Leighton, who was named Defensive Player of the year for the Mountain West League, played an outstanding game at the Las Vegas Bowl helping Boise State win that Bowl game. This game was the final “frosting on the cake” for the NFL to invite him to the Draft. Congratulations and best wishes to Leighton! We BSU/Leighton fans will miss watching him play on the blue turf and other college fields, but are looking forward to watching him play in the NFL.
Our Salmon River Canyon lost a beloved son, brother, father, uncle, and friend last week. Tony L. Anderson, 51, of White Bird, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at his home. Tony graduated from Salmon River High School and is the son of Joe and Carolyn Anderson of White Bird, formerly of Riggins. His family gathered together for a dinner in his memory last week; a memorial service will be held at a later date.
As is the tradition of some to make New Year’s Resolutions, make them wisely and follow them through to the end…or as long as you can. To others who take one day at a time, make great use of each day letting family and friends know you love them. To those who just “plow through the year,” happy plowing. Whatever you do, have a Happy New year 2018. Mother Teresa shared a great quote several years ago that is worthy of a New Year’s listen: “If you want to bring happiness to the whole world, go home and love your family.
