RIGGINS — My quote for this week is “I admire people who always show kindness and help people, no matter if they’re struggling with their own problems. They are truly a gift to this world.” Anonymous. ‘Tis the season to show kindness, compassion, love, and friendship to everyone; we never know the struggles of others. A smile or a kind word may be just the thing that person needs.

Leighton Vander Esch, son of Darwin and Sandy Vander Esch, SRHS 2014 graduate and present BSU Linebacker, was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year 2017. Leighton became the first Bronco to earn Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors, the conference announced Wednesday; Korey Hall won the award in the WAC in 2006. Leighton was just named MVP Defensive Player of the Mountain West Championship game with BSU as winners last Saturday December 2, 2017! Leighton is one of seven players to start every game this fall. Leighton, your “Salmon River family” is cheering for you as you continue to be that outstanding young man we know and love. The football sports announcers are enchanted with this “BSU football player who walked onto the BSU Football field from a background of 8-man football at Salmon River High School in tiny Riggins, Idaho.” BSU will now take on the Oregon Ducks Saturday Dec. 16, at 1:30 p.m., MT at the 2017 Las Vegas Bowl. Riggins Fourth Annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting Festivities, sponsored by the Salmon River Chamber of Commerce, was held in the Riggins City Park for the first time with 75-80 people there. Santa and Mrs. Santa with one elf arrived in the fire truck driven by Chief Jeff Joyce. They were a hit with the kiddos and adults as well as were the hayrides given by Doug and Sharon Boggan. The hot chocolate, hot apple cider and 300 cookies made by Marie and Nicole of Two Rivers Coffee were delicious. Yours truly, Jeannie Fitch, was the emcee for the evening; Bev Knight led the Christmas carolers. The Native Sisters Tree Service, D, and Brady Clay decorated the huge tree, stage, gazebo, and cook shack; it is beautifully wonderful. Thank you to those who brought can goods for the Riggins Food Bank. Plan to drive around town to see all the colorful lights and Christmas decorations.
