COTTONWOOD “I am shocked – absolutely shocked,” said a smiling Erin Shears.
Shears was honored by more than 150 community members at a surprise celebration at the Cottonwood Community Hall Monday night, Oct. 22.
“We wanted to come together to thank Erin for 20 years of service to the kids and families of this community,” said co-organizer Jessica Meyers.
Meyers, who went on to say Shears has taught preschool for 20 years and has been the Center for Discovery after-school program director for more than 18 years, all within the Cottonwood School District buildings.
“She teaches our kids, provides a safe place for them after school and more,” Meyers said. Shears arranges for community kids Christmas shopping, family Bingo, rides to and from swimming lessons in Grangeville and reads to them at the library, among other things, she noted.
“I just do my job. I cannot believe this,” said a teary-eyed Shears.
Shears graduated from Prairie High School in 1992 and married sweetheart Dave. They have three children: Madison, 16; Keenan, 14; and Carter, 12.
“I’m really honored, and, yes, totally surprised,” Shears laughed. “This is a wonderful community I live in.”
Past and present students, along with family members and friends, attended and showered Shears with gifts and hugs.
