GRANGEVILLE – A segment of local history will bid adieu to Grangeville this week.
GoBidToday.com, in cooperation with United Country Real Estate/Musick and Sons Auction and Real Estate Services, will sell Ted Billups’ tractor and memorabilia collection.
The on-line auction of more than 30 collectible tractors, as well as hundreds of manuals, toys and other keepsakes, will end Thursday, Nov. 29, 3 p.m. MST. The final preview or inspection of items is today, Wednesday, Nov. 28, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Billups’ north Grangeville shops.
“So far, we have 137 registered bidders from 23 states, three from Canada and one from Australia,” said auctioneer Kyle Musick on Monday.
“We’ll get more popping up this week, especially after the final inspection,” added auctioneer Rick Musick.
The Musicks said about 40 of the bidders are from the Camas Prairie.
Billups was well-known throughout the U.S. and beyond as a tractor aficionado, mechanic and restorer extraordinaire. He was employed as a mechanic and shop foreman at Brown Motors, which eventually became Bell Equipment, for 50 years. He remained at work there for another 25 years, bringing his total years of employment to 75 years. He died March 3 of this year at the age of 94. He and his wife, Dolores, had two daughters, both of whom live in Boise.
The Billups were host to many tractor shows and demonstrations throughout the years, and also displayed the collectible machines in many Border Days parades.
The oldest machine in the collection dates back to 1915 while the newest is from 1958. Among the most unique are a Yuba ball tread tractor circa 1915 and a Buckeye Trundaar crawler from 1918.
“Ted was an avid collector of many different types of tractors, crawlers and motors – he didn’t collect or restore just one type or brand, but many,” Rick said. This includes Rumley, Minneapolis-Moline, John Deere, Allis Chalmers, Case, Oliver, Caterpillar and International.
