A California man died in a motorcycle accident on the Magruder Road last week.
Bradford D. Smith, 66, of Escondido, succumbed to his injures at the scene, according to Capt. Jim Gorges, Idaho County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO).
The incident was reported last Tuesday, Sept. 22, around 11 a.m. According to Gorges, Smith and a friend were riding on the Magruder Road at Kim Creek Saddle, approximately 60 miles east of Red River. While negotiating a curve, Smith’s 2017 Honda BTM veered off the right shoulder of the roadway. The bike hit the embankment and Smith was thrown over the handlebars.
Smith’s friend contacted a hunting group in the area who had an in-reach device and was able to get a message out.
“I received the call about 1:30 p.m. and called Backcountry Medics helicopter due to the remote location,” Gorges said. “Backcountry picked me up at the Grangeville airport and landed at Kim Creek Saddle, about a 40-minute flight,” which otherwise would have been 10 hours by ground to drive in.
Gorges completed the crash and coroner’s investigation on scene and flew back out with Smith’s body. Blackmer Funeral Home is working with the family for arrangements.
