The Prairie boys pulled off a major upset of previously unbeaten Lapwai, 50-49, at the last second last Friday night, Feb. 24.

Pirates senior Patrick Chmelik came up with a takeaway and the winning basket after Lapwai appeared to have clinched the Whitepine League’s District II title with a defensive rebound.

Lapwai entered the game with a 21-0 overall record including two previous wins over the Pirates. Chmelik finished with 15 points, including the two on a 10-foot jump shot that reversed the score in Prairie’s favor as the LCSC Activity Center buzzer sounded.

The Pirates had already secured a place a state, but now go as the district’s top seed. This Thursday, March 2, they’ll play Wilder in the first round at 3 p.m. MT at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.

With a win, the Pirates would face the Valley-Riverstone winner at 6:15 p.m. MT on Friday, March 3. The 1AD1 championship game is slated to tip off at 11:30 a.m. MT at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
