GRANGEVILLE Memorial Day services and activities are scheduled for Grangeville for this Monday, May 30.
A tribute to fallen heroes is set for Prairie View Cemetery at the Veterans Memorial, 9 a.m. Crea-DeHaven Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3520 will present the tribute and read General Order No. 11 from the Civil War requesting honor of veterans by laying flowers on the graves of veterans.
A Presentation of Wreaths by Grangeville American Legion Post 37; Grangeville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 37; 40 & 8 Voiture 906 and Le Femmes Cabane 906, will also take place. An Honor Guard presentation will be by American Legion Post 37 and Legionnaire Jerry Scholten will play the bagpipes.
The public is invited. No seating is available.
A community memorial service is set for 11 a.m. at Grangeville High School gym. Seating available and the public is invited.
Master of ceremonies will be Jinny Cash, American Legion 2nd District Commander. Guest speaker is John Nida, 2015-2016 commander of Grangeville American Legion Post 37
Nida recently completed a year of service as the Commander of Grangeville American Legion Post 37. He has been an active member of the Honor Guard and other American Legion programs for five years. He is currently serving the 2nd District of the American Legion as a vice commander.
Nida is a 20-year veteran of the Idaho National Guard and is a former commander of the 116th HHC in Lewiston, he retired at the rank of captain with numerous awards. He spent a year in Afghanistan training local police officers. He served in law enforcement for 30 years and is a former chief deputy for the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office. He also spent 11 years on the Cottonwood school board. He and his wife, Tara, reside in Cottonwood. He has three children: Joseph currently serving in the United States Air Force; James, a former Marine; and Katherine who is a student Idaho State University.
