GRANGEVILLE -- On Friday, March 29, a 12-person jury in Grangeville found Jessica L. Colpitts, 34, guilty of first-degree murder of Samantha S. Fignani.
"We the jury, unanimously find the defendant Jessica Colpitts, guilty of murder in the first degree,” the clerk said.
Fignani was shot at her home in Orofino on May 22, 2017. She was pronounced dead at Clearwater Valley Hospital shortly after being shot.
Colpitts' friend Cassie Madsen testified that she drove Colpitts to Fignani's house, expecting an altercation over Fignani's relationship with Joseph "Jojo" Walker, the father of Colpitts' son.
The confrontation turned deadly when Colpitts shot Fignani point-blank with a shotgun, which belonged to Walker, according to Madsen's testimony. When Colpitts returned to the car, she was laughing, Madsen said. "I shot her in the crotch," Madsen recounted Colpitts as saying. "She'll live."
Second District Judge Gregory FitzMaurice set sentencing for July 9. Until then, Colpitts will be held at the Latah County Jail. Colpitts faces a maximum sentence of life in prison as Clearwater County Prosecutor Clayne Tyler said he will not pursue the death penalty.
