For about five minutes, the Salmon River boys looked like they might beat Genesis Prep against all odds, but the Jaguars – using a major height advantage to generate a massive rebounding edge – took control and slowly tore the Savages apart.

The final score ended up 47-32 during the first round of boys basketball 1AD2 state tournament play Thursday night, Feb. 28, but SRHS had led by as many as six before Genesis began creating the second-chance points that decided the contest.

Canyon Harper – who finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds, per stats provided by the IHSAA – sank two three-pointers during the first quarter. The second of Harper's treys followed an offensive rebound by Isaac Hofflander, and it put SRHS ahead 8-2.

Genesis Prep struck back with hoops by tall tower Kon Ajang (16 points) and Jacob Schultz (10 points). After the Jaguars briefly led 10-9, Hofflander notched a two for Salmon River – but that was the last time SRHS would Thursday.

Genesis Prep led 15-11 after the first quarter, and pushed the lead up to 11 during a stretch marked by back-to-back SRHS turnovers.

Randy McClure hit a three-pointer to beat the second quarter buzzer, but the Jaguars led 28-16 at halftime.

Salmon River played high-pressure defense late in the game, drawing cheers from the large-as-ever group of their supporters in the stands, but Genesis extended its lead to as many as 21 during the third quarter.

At 8 p.m. MT Friday, March 1, SRHS will play Mackay at Caldwell High School.
