Arnzen to rep Idaho at Down Under

Ryan Arnzen of Prairie High School will represent Idaho and the USA in a cross-country meet in Australia this summer.

Prairie cross-country runner Ryan Arnzen has accepted an invitation to run at the Down Under Sports Tournament this summer in Australia, where he will be representing Idaho and the USA.

He will be heading to Australia June 29 and returning July 9.

He is looking to raise $4,000 by May 15, he told the Free Press last week.

Arnzen and the Pirates qualified for the state cross-country meet last season — his first running cross-country — and said he “loved it.”

“I can’t say I hated anything,” he said. “Except, well, the moment right before race day. That was the most nerve-wracking, just the anticipation of the race.”

Arnzen was coached, in part, by his mom, Jenny, who said that was neat because “I could see he was taking to heart the things I was saying as a coach.”

For the Down Under trip, his time will be structured around team events, with one day for a side-trip — perhaps to the Great Barrier Reef. “That seems like it would be fun,” he said.
