Schumacher levels up

Prairie High School football standout Spencer Schumacher formalized his commitment to play football at Montana Tech next fall during a signing event held Dec. 19 at PHS.

COTTONWOOD — “It was all about education,” Prairie High football standout Spencer Schumacher said of his decision to sign with Montana Tech during an event the school hosted last Wednesday, Dec. 19. “Tech is a top-five college for engineering, and that’s what I plan to go into. The money part worked out and the education part worked out.”

Schumacher had attended summer camps there — in Butte, Mont. — the past four seasons.

“For academics and athletics, they offered me $15,000, and that pretty much cut everything in half,” he said.

Schumacher said coaches have penciled him in as a defensive end or a hybrid linebacker.

Montana Tech competes at the NAIA level in the Frontier Conference, in which the team posted a 5-5 overall record. The Diggers’ rivals include College of Idaho.
