Vander Esch sees more action; Cowboys beat New York Giants

After playing a limited role during the Cowboys’ opener, Leighton Vander Esch’s playing time increased to about 40 percent of the defensive snaps during Dallas’s 20-13 win over the New York Giants last Sunday night, Sept. 16.

He was cited for holding during punt coverage in the second quarter, but booked a couple of his seven tackles during crunch time.

With Giants quarterback Eli Manning running a two-minute drill during the fourth quarter, Vander Esch booked consecutive tackles against short passes, forcing a time- out with less than a minute to go. New York could have tried a 55-yard field goal right then, but opted to use more clock and went on to kick from 38.

The field goal made it a seven-point game, but possession returned to the Cowboys on a failed onside kick, and the game ended with a kneel.

Next, Dallas is at Seattle this Sunday, Sept. 23.
